Rangers goalkeeper Andy Firth may be on the bench this weekend.
Rangers will be without goalkeeper Allan McGregor this weekend after the club failed in a violent conduct appeal yesterday.
The veteran shot-stopper has been banned for two games after a high challenge on Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson last week, but Rangers appealed on grounds that it wasn’t intentional.
Their appeal failed, meaning McGregor is now out of action for a couple of games, starting with this weekend’s home game against St Johnstone.
That means that Wes Foderingham is likely to start in his place, and surely means that Andy Firth will be handed a bench role at Ibrox.
Firth, 22, was a surprise January signing for Rangers as he arrived from non-league English side Barrow in order to reunite with his former Liverpool coach Steven Gerrard.
Firth wasn’t even first choice for Barrow at the time of his Rangers move, but with Robby McCrorie loaned out to Morton, Firth was brought in as extra cover in case of a disaster.
That disaster has now struck, as McGregor is out. Firth is now set to be on the bench much, much earlier than he could have possibly expected when he arrived at Ibrox.
Few would have thought that Firth would make a Rangers squad so soon after his arrival, but the Gers are now a Foderingham injury away from being forced to use Firth between the sticks.
That would be a huge step up from the Barrow bench, and Gers fans will surely see Firth on the bench this weekend, which arguably justifies Gerrard’s decision to bring in another goalkeeper as additional cover.
