The first signs of controversy have been spotted ahead of England vs Argentina as one FIFA official has been accused of ‘not listening’.
England face Argentina in a World Cup game for the first time since 1998 and for a place in the final.
As long standing rivals, there is guaranteed to be a great atmosphere but one UK journalist has spoken of a nightmare situation.

English journalist says they were refused access to the media suite
Argentina fans are outnumbering England fans by 80 to 20 in Atlanta, but there are still plenty of Three Lions fans in attendance.
As well as supporters there are also journalists covering the game at the Mercedes-Benz stadium but English fans have been refused access to where the refreshments, with FIFA officials refusing to allow them in.
Recalling the incident on the Daily Mail, the journalist said: “First confrontation of the day has already been lost. English media refused entry to area of stadium where refreshments are dispensed.
“Rule One: Never try and keep an English football writer away from free food. Rule Two: Never expect a man with a FIFA badge to listen to reason. On we go….England on their way to the stadium according to the huge screen hanging over this pitch…”
England’s record against Argentina
A game between England and Argentina is quite a rarity, despite the animosity between the two nations.
Before tonight, the two have met five times in World Cup history, with history favouring England kindly.
| Year | Result |
|---|---|
| 2002 | Argentina 0-1 England |
| 1998 | Argentina 6-5 England (on penalties) |
| 1986 | Argentina 2-1 England |
| 1966 | England 1-0 Argentina |
| 1962 | England 3-1 Argentina |
In the five games, England have won three of them whereas Argentina have only won two of those games.
