What a miserable debut for Kieran Trippier at Newcastle United this afternoon.

The former Tottenham Hotspur defender performed well on an otherwise dismal first outing since joining Newcastle earlier this week.

Cambridge United won 1-0 at St James’s Park to dump Eddie Howe’s outfit out of the FA Cup in a rotten third-round encounter for the Magpies today.

However, the player received a massive reception from the home supporters in attendance the 42-year-old manager has revealed that he’s hoping that other new signings follow the England international to Tyneside, claiming it would ‘breathe new confidence’ into the team.

He told BBC Radio Newcastle afterwards: “We would love to [make more signings]. I think you can see what Kieran did to the team. The response to him was first class. New signings at this moment would breathe new confidence into the team. So, fingers crossed.”

Exciting

Despite the defeat, Howe’s transfer revelation is an exciting one nonetheless.

Nobody expected Trippier’s arrival to be Newcastle’s first and last signing of the January window anyway, but Howe’s optimism that other targets are on the way is encouraging.

Besides, being out of this competition allows United to focus entirely on staying in the Premier League.

Arguing that losing to Cambridge is a positive result is an enormous stretch, but there’s an undeniable silver lining for the Newcastle supporters – whose outfit are 19th in the Premier League standings.

Elimination from this competiton, combined with the likelyhood for new additions, January could still wind up being a decent month
