What a performance Joe Gomez posted for Liverpool on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side edged out Newcastle to move top of the Premier League standings.

Well, Manchester City ultimately re-took their place at the summit later in the evening, but the Reds were still there for a number of hours – and deservedly so.

Liverpool won 1-0 at St James’s Park and although Klopp’s attacking quantities weren’t quite at the races, the defensive ones were quite simply immense.

And none more so than Gomez.

The centre-back was deployed in a right-back role as Klopp elected to rest Trent Alexander-Arnold – and the former Charlton Athletic defender, a £3.5 million signing under Brendan Rodgers, was exceptional.

It’s been a tough season for Gomez and Allan Saint-Maximin is a player who could’ve made it even tougher, but not once did the Liverpool man look threatened by his French counterpart.

And attacking-wise, he gave a fine account of himself too and would – and should – have bagged an assist following a surging run forward, only for Sadio Mane to miss a gilt-edged opportunity to make it 2-0 in the second half.

It was a solid performance from Gomez overall, with The Echo giving him a 9/10.

Here’s what the 24-year-old posted on Instagram after the victory.

A number of Liverpool players responded to their teammate on the social networking website, but nobody had a more fitting response than Roberto Firmino.

The Brazil international, who is injured right now, simply responded by writing the word ‘machine’ under Gomez’s post.

No emojis, or exclamation marks – just ‘machine’.

And given Gomez’s performance, well it’s probably the perfect word to describe him against the Magpies.
