Roberto Firmino has paid tribute to former Liverpool teammate Georginio Wijnaldum.
Wijnaldum left Liverpool on a free transfer this past summer, ultimately joining Paris Saint-Germain.
But the Dutchman spent five wonderful years playing alongside Firmino and others under Jurgen Klopp.
The former Newcastle United midfielder turned 31 on Thursday.
And here’s the message that his Brazilian mate sent him on Instagram:
Legend
Ultimately, Wijnaldum left Liverpool for financial reasons.
He is on record as saying that he wanted to stay and continue under Jurgen Klopp but the Anfield side weren’t willing to pay his salary requests.
But the truth is, Wijnaldum, who earns £165,000 per week at PSG, is very much a club legend on Merseyside.
Some Liverpool fans turned on him during the second half of last season.
But after winning a Premier League and Champions League title – and scoring twice in that semi-final win over Barcelona – he’ll never be forgotten.
And that pretty much means he’s a legendary figure in spite of a disappointing ending to his Liverpool story.
Another way to measure his impact is to ask whether he would still get his game under Klopp.
And with the German manager suffering a lot of injuries to midfield personnel, the answer is a resounding yes.
