‘Fine addition to any team’: Sky pundit thinks reported Celtic & Rangers target could leave

Stephen Warnock told the Football Show on Sky Sports (07/12/20 at 11:15 am) that Jesse Lingard would be a ‘fine addition to any team’ amid links with the likes of Celtic, Rangers, Aston Villa, Everton and West Brom.

TeamTalk have previously reported that those north of the border, Celtic and Rangers, have expressed an interest in the 27-year-old Englishman.

The fact that Lingard’s contract at Manchester United expires next summer and he has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford, it does increase his chances of leaving his boyhood club.

Warnock, who played with the playmaker during his brief time at Derby County, was asked whether it’s time for Lingard to push for something new in his career given his current situation.

“Quite possibly it is,” said Warnock. “Only he will know that. How he’s feeling and what he’s like.

“I have played with Jesse and I know what type of character he is. The type of player he is as well. He will be a fine addition to any team.

“But what he has to do now is make a lifestyle choice. Also, the team choice and what works for him. If he is having a few problems off the pitch, with his family and things behind the scenes then pick something that works for you and your family. Or for you as an individual.

“But also make sure the football style suits you as well. If you are playing well on the pitch then often that can lead to a happy lifestyle off it.”

A man for finals, during his Manchester United career, Lingard has netted in three finals for the club and helped them lift the trophy on every occasion.

But since featuring for England at the 2018 World Cup, Lingard’s career has fallen off a cliff and he needs the tools to make that climb back up.

Whilst one English free-agent – Jack Wilshere – continues to be touted to join Rangers, perhaps the better option would be Lingard or would their Old Firm rivals, amid the chaos at Parkhead, have the financial muscle to lure him to the club and try to play his part in lifting the gloom at Celtic?
