Quoted by The Daily Record, Newcastle United new boy Stuart Findlay is aware that success at the Magpies is in his own hands after a no-nonsense chat with Under-21 coach Peter Beardsley after joining.
The 20-year-old defender was released by Celtic this summer but Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez swooped to bring him to Tyneside earlier this month.
The Scot has already featured in an Under-21 outing under Beardsley, whom he claims told him straight that hard work will result in bigger and better opportunities going forward.
“Peter Beardsley put me straight in at left centre-back, which is my favourite position. What I liked about Peter was that he didn’t give me any nonsense when I met him,” he said via The Daily Record.
“He didn’t tell me I’d be challenging for the first team in a couple of weeks. He just told me that it’s down to me. He said if I perform the way I can, he’ll make sure I get the recognition and I really respected him for that.
“He was really honest about that, which is what you need in a coach.”
Findlay is unlikely to get much game time in Championship outings over the coming months.
The pressure is firmly on Newcastle and Benitez as they plot an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation last term.
Because of this, the veteran Spanish coach does not have the freedom to experiment with young talent and must instead go with tried-and-tested personnel.
That being said, if the Scotland Under-21 ace puts himself in a position where Benitez cannot ignore his progression then the youngster could get chances to impress.
