Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side sit just two points behind Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic in the table.

Rangers have made a fine start to life under Steven Gerrard, and they seem to be in a great position from which to mount a sustained challenge to Celtic in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.
The question is, however, is that a realistic aim for the Gers this season?
One statistic highlights how difficult Gerrard’s task will be this season.
A sports salaries survey, published by sportingintelligence.com, highlighted how Celtic’s yearly expenditure on wages (£865,614) is nearly twice that of their Glasgow rivals Rangers (£466,556).
Gerrard has undoubtedly made some shrewd acquisitions at Ibrox, but Brendan Rodgers clearly has more quality at his disposal at Parkhead.
The fact that Rangers sit just two points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table is testament to the job being done by Gerrard at Ibrox.

If the Gers are to really make a sustained challenge to the Hoops’ supremacy over the course of the next few years, however, they will surely need to invest more heavily in the playing squad, both in transfer fees and wages.
In order to do that, however, Rangers will need to achieve success on the pitch first, especially in Europe.
Qualification for the knock-out stages of the Europa League would be a great start, and if Gerrard is backed sufficiently over the course of the next two transfer windows, there is no reason why he cannot guide his side to their first league title since 2011.
