Jamie Carragher has taken to Twitter to address Ally McCoist’s admission that he tried to bring him to Rangers before he announced his retirement from football.
McCoist told talkSPORT that he called Gary McAllister in an attempt to sign the Champions League-winning centre-back after he left Liverpool.
He said: ‘I tried to sign him, believe it or not, when he was leaving Liverpool. I phoned Gary McAllister and tried to get him, but obviously he was going into the media circles and is doing very well at that.
‘I’m not sure he was underrated, for me, as he was a top player. I know what you are saying that in some quarters he’s not given the credit he deserves, but certainly not in my case.’
Ultimately, Carragher went to work in the media instead, and he has now addressed McCoist’s claim on Twitter.
The ex-Liverpool defender joked: ‘Finally I’ve found out another club did want to sign me, & thought I was half decent!!!!!!!’
The Sky Sports pundit retired at the age of 35, but McCoist clearly felt that he could still come to Ibrox and do a job.
With his level of experience and ability, there’s no reason why the former England international couldn’t have done just that.
Carragher amassed a huge 737 appearances for Liverpool, winning one Champions League title, two FA Cups, three League Cups, one UEFA Cup and two UEFA Super Cups, along with two Community Shield wins.
He also represented England at three major tournaments, having appeared at the 2004 European Championship, and also the World Cup in 2006 and 2010.
He arguably would’ve been one of the most decorated players in history to pull on a Rangers shirt, and it also would’ve been interesting to see how he fared under McCoist in Scotland.
