Celtic are reportedly back in for Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna.
Celtic have seen Filip Benkovic and Dedryck Boyata form a strong partnership at centre back of late, but Brendan Rodgers will head towards January with concerns about both.
After all, Boyata is out of contract at the end of the season and could be sold in January, whilst Benkovic may be recalled by parent club Leicester City if they need the Croatian back at the King Power Stadium.
Now, the Daily Mail report that Celtic are attempting to revive a deal for Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna in January, giving Rodgers a potentially perfect way to start 2019.
Celtic wanted to land McKenna in the summer before eventually landing Benkovic on loan, and with concerns about both him and Boyata, Celtic are now readying a new move for McKenna.
The 22-year-old is one of the top young Scottish defenders around and could be the ideal replacement for Boyata, arriving with an immediate knowledge of Scottish football rather than attempting to bed in an import.
Rodgers could be the right manager to help McKenna develop his ball-playing ability from the back, as well as offering balance at the back as a left-footer, whilst beating a Premier League side like Wolves to his signature would also be a huge boost.
Not landing McKenna over the summer was something of an error from Celtic given that Rodgers was clearly keen on signing him, but now is the time for the Bhoys to give Rodgers who he wants – and strengthening their defensive options with McKenna would be a really positive way to kick off 2019.
