Morgan Sanson has finally earned some minutes for Aston Villa this season!
With Steven Gerrard out of the door, Unai Emery, in his first game in charge of Villa as they beat Manchester United 3-1 on Sunday, handed Sanson a chance from the bench during the dying moments of the game.
The 28-year-old’s return to action was met with huge cheers from the Villa Park faithful because, all season long, he had his backside parked on the bench with Gerrard, not once, bringing him off.
Well, the player had a subtle dig at the former Rangers boss by posting ‘finally’ on his Instagram at earning some minutes.
“Finally… Thanks a lot for this great reception. Much appreciation.”
GERRARD’S TREATMENT OF SANSON BAFFLING
It’s quite staggering how Gerrard used Sanson by continuing to keep him on the bench without earning a single minute this season.
It’s not like the first-team players were singing from the rooftops, in fact, far from it. John McGinn, with the captain’s armband attached to him, was struggling and needed dropping on numerous occasions.
Yet, Gerrard decided against doing that, including not changing his slow and boring system, which in the end, just resulted in him getting the boot out of the door.
Unai Emery was at PSG when Sanson was working wonders at Marseille, and there are suggestions he will get a ‘new slate’ under his new boss… and it has already started.
Signed during the 2021 January transfer window, the French midfielder just hasn’t been able to get going, making only 21 appearances during that period.
But with Emery playing a double-pivot, it offers Sanson every chance to earn more regular minutes and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he gets a few more when Villa travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United again, this time, in the League Cup next week.
