The tension between Israel and Palestine seems to have no limits and affects both countries in many ways.

This was visible at a recent FIFA congress, when Gianni Infantino’s attempt to bring Palestinian Football Association president Jibril Rajoub and Israel FA vice-president Basim Sheikh Suliman together for a handshake failed on stage.

On that occasion, Infantino said FIFA would keep working to give hope to children from both countries. Now, the governing body appears to be trying another symbolic route through youth football.

FIFA is proposing that Israel play Palestine in the opening match of its inaugural under-15s football festival in the United States, according to The Athletic.

The event is reportedly planned for September and is expected to be open to all 211 FIFA member associations, which makes the proposed fixture even more politically sensitive.

The idea is being framed as a youth-football moment, but the identities of the teams mean it would immediately become one of the most watched matches at the festival.

The wider context is difficult. The Palestinian Football Association has previously pushed for action against Israel within FIFA, while football has repeatedly reflected the broader conflict rather than escaped it.

That is why the proposal will be watched closely before anything is confirmed. A youth match can offer a softer setting, but it cannot remove the political meaning attached to the fixture.

FIFA may want the game to send a message about coexistence. Whether both sides accept that framing is the question that now matters.
