According to the BBC, FIFA executives have agreed to publish a ‘legally appropriate version’ of a report into allegations of World Cup bidding corruption.
Reports suggest that FIFA’s executives have unanimously decided in favour of releasing the full report compiled by Michael Garcia about the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
The decision was made at a meeting in Morocco this morning where the Club World Cup is currently taking place. No vote was necessary because all parties were in agreement.
Garcia resigned his position as FIFA ethics committee chairman on Wednesday after feeling that his findings were misrepresented when a short form of the report was released.
The lawyer had attempted to appeal against the version of his report that fellow Hans-Joachim Eckert made public, but was unsuccessful.
Football’s governing body was at first adamant that the complete report would not be publicly disclosed, but worldwide media outrage may have changed its mind.
However, nothing will be released until ethics committee charges against three FIFA ExCo members have been dealt with, which could take some time.
Britain’s FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce, from Northern Ireland, has spoken in favour of today’s outcome.
“It shows that people at Fifa at the moment do desire transparency and the sooner we can get on with talking about the game of football that we all love, the better.”
