Celtic signed Colin Kazim-Richards for free, according to Feyenoord’s Martin van Geel.
Feyenoord technical director Martin van Geel has told RTV Rijnmond, as quoted by SoccerNews.nl, that Colin-Kazim Richards was allowed to join Celtic for free.
Kazim-Richards, 29, signed for Celtic on deadline day and made his Bhoys debut as a substitute in the 2-1 defeat to Aberdeen on Wednesday evening.
The Turkish international striker is seen as a major boost to Celtic’s attacking options, even though he left Feyenoord under something of a controversial cloud.
As reported by The Guardian, Kazim-Richards was involved in an altercation with a journalist, and was subsequently frozen out by manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Feyenoord did move Kazim-Richards on, but Celtic didn’t disclose whether they had paid a fee or essentially taken over the striker’s contract on a free transfer, though Dutch journalist Martijn Krabbendam took to Twitter to claim that Celtic had paid between €100,000 (£77,000) and €200,000 (£154,000) for Kazim-Richards.
Now though, Feyenoord technical director Martin van Geel has been asked about the situation surrounding a fee for Kazim-Richards, and has told RTV Rijnmond, as quoted by SoccerNews.nl, that he allowed the striker to join Celtic for absolutely nothing.
Instead, Feyenoord simply wanted Kazim-Richards’ salary off the wage bill, and waived any fee just to get him off the books – meaning Celtic may have landed themselves a bargain, if he can build on a decent cameo display against Aberdeen.
