Team tries to keep focus on racing as chairman’s criticism dominates Las Vegas weekend

Business around Ferrari has been overshadowed in Las Vegas, where John Elkann’s pointed remarks about Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have become the dominant storyline. His comments followed the team’s double DNF in Brazil, where he urged Leclerc to “talk less” and Hamilton admitted he was “living a nightmare” after a podium-less start to life at Maranello.

Ferrari insist Elkann was simply trying to motivate the team in the fight for P2 in the constructors’ standings, but many inside the paddock are unconvinced. Fans have demanded accountability from the chairman, while both drivers have struggled to play down the controversy as the media continue to push for clarity.

But during Leclerc’s press conference, the situation became so dominated by Elkann-related questions that a team representative stepped in, asking journalists to focus on the actual race weekend.

BBC reporter Andrew Benson described the moment on the Chequered Flag podcast, saying nearly every question centred on Elkann’s criticism. By the midpoint of Leclerc’s session, the Ferrari PR staffer interjected: “Have you got any questions about Las Vegas?” Hamilton later admitted the season had tested his resilience, adding that he struggles to “unplug” from racing amid the pressure.

Is Charles Leclerc already considering life after Ferrari?

Ahead of the Las Vegas weekend, Elkann reportedly phoned Leclerc to explain his public comments. The Monegasque maintains the chairman meant them constructively, but observers believe the relationship may have been damaged. Ralf Schumacher has urged Leclerc to explore a “Plan B,” warning that long-term frustration could push him out.

Leclerc has grown increasingly disappointed with Ferrari’s stalled progress and his prolonged wait for a title challenge. With an exit clause available in 2026, speculation around his future is growing. Aston Martin have “repeatedly contacted” his management as they prepare for Fernando Alonso’s eventual retirement and eye Leclerc as a marquee signing for 2027.
