AC Milan’s on loan Chelsea striker Torres claims that a move to his former club was never likely in the past summer.
This summer Fernando Torres departed Chelsea after failing to ever live up to his £50 million price-tag in London.
Torres arrived at the club a potent Premier League goal-scorer with Liverpool but struggled to consistently hit the back of the net in a disappointing spell at Stamford Bridge.
For many a summer Chelsea have been rumoured to be trying to flog Torres, this summer was no different.
In the end AC Milan got the Spanish international striker on a two-year loan deal but they were not the only team said to be keen on his services.
In fact his boyhood club Atletico Madrid were rumoured to be keen on his services.
Torres is still considered a hero by Los Colchoneros fans. He was made captain of the club while still a teenager and scored 91 goals while at the club.
Atleti lost their star striker this summer, Diego Costa joining Chelsea for £32 million. For many it seemed like a simple swap might be in order. In fact the club seemed to openly admit this was a possibility.
But Torres has spoken out about the rumours linking him with a return to his first club this summer. He told Diario AS that no deal to head back to the Vicente Calderon was ever likely:
“There was no real option to return to Atletico Madrid. I think they played with the enthusiasm of the people and I did not like that. I’ve said many times, the Atleti I’m not going to rule out. I’ll go if I have desire to compete, to play, to fight, mostly because Atleti today is very different from the one I left. I follow them every week. But it is an option that is not real. “
