The summer signing was outstanding for Tottenham Hotspur against Real Madrid.
When Tottenham Hotspur signed Fernando Llorente from Swansea City back in the summer, it was hailed as a fine piece of business from a Spurs side that needed quality back-up for Harry Kane, but the question remained: Could they play together?
Tuesday night’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid answered that in emphatic fashion, with the two Tottenham strikers brilliant together and the Spaniard’s selfless performance suggesting he could be the surprise key to Spurs’ European hopes.
Llorente has barely featured since signing for Tottenham, with Kane the undisputed main man in North London and manager Mauricio Pochettino sticking to one up front more often than not.
That was not the case against Real, with Llorente’s hold-up play vital to Tottenham’s ultimately successful game plan.
Not many sides come away from the Bernabeu with a point and, with a little more fortune, the visitors could have even headed back to England with all three.
That was not to be, but Llorente was brilliant during his 80 minutes on the field and on this evidence it will not be the last time he and Kane start together.
