Tottenham Hotspur cruised into the knockout stages of the Champions League, finishing top of their group.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men appeared to be drawn into the group of death for this year’s competition, with Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid drawn in the same pool.
However, Tottenham booked their ticket into the knockout stages with relative ease, beating Dortmund home and away and taking four points from their two games with Madrid to finish top of the group with 16 points – the most any team in any group accumulated this year.
And after completing the group-stage with an emphatic win over APOEL Nicosia at Wembley, Llorente seemed to be able to only find one word to sum up Spurs’ performance in the competition so far.
“Unbelievable. We have to be very happy because it’s very difficult in the Champions League, but to be better than Real Madrid in the group is unbelievable. We have to believe in ourselves because we have demonstrated we are a very good team,” he told the club’s official website when asked to reflect on Spurs’ Champions League campaign so far.
“In this moment we need confidence because the last few games in the Premier League have been difficult for us. Now we have to change this way in the next game against Stoke. That’s important for us.”
As Llorente alluded to, the focus now switches to the Premier League as Tottenham try to get themselves back on track after a poor run of results in the top flight.
Pochettino’s men kick off a run of seven league games in a row when they host Stoke City at Wembley at the weekend and will be hoping for their first league win in more than a month.
