Fernando Llorente says he turned down Swansea offer to join Tottenham

Fernando Llorente joined Tottenham Hotspur from Swansea City in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Fernando Llorente has told WalesOnline that he could have signed a new contract with Swansea City before his summer switch between the two clubs.

Llorente joined Tottenham from Premier League rivals Swansea in the summer transfer window.

According to The Sun, Spurs had to pay the Swans a transfer fee of £12 million in order to secure the services of the 32-year-old, who has scored seven goals in 24 international matches for the Spain national football team so far in his career.

Llorente has revealed that before he made the move to Spurs, he was offered a new contract by Swansea.

“This was one possibility, but finally Tottenham made it possible for this (to happen),” Llorente told WalesOnline when asked if he was offered a new deal by Swansea.

Llorente enjoyed a successful season on a personal level for Swansea last season, and he would have been the first-choice striker at the Swans this campaign if he had remained at the Liberty Stadium.

The 32-year-old Spain international’s decision to snub a new contract from Swansea and join Spurs where he is the second-choice striker behind Harry Kane shows the pulling power of the North London club.

Llorente, 32, still has a few years left in him at the highest level, and the fact that a World Cup and European Championship winner decided to play second fiddle at Spurs underlines just attractive a club Tottenham are.
