The BBC pundit was hugely impressed by the Ibrox striker’s goal in Rangers’ win.

Steven Gerrard’s side were in action away to League One outfit East Fife in the Scottish League Cup and managed to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition with a 3-0 victory.
It wasn’t a blow-away performance from the Gers, but certainly enough to avoid any real cup drama.
Defoe was crucial to the victory, scoring the first goal of the afternoon with a delicious touch, bursting run beyond the Fifers’ defence and classy finish.
Ferguson waxed lyrical about the effort.
As quoted by BBC Scotland (18/08 live match page, 15:31), he said: “What a brilliant touch it was, that ball was fizzed into him.
“Sensational, he took it away from not one defender, but two or three.
“And when he got one on one with the keeper that’s his game isn’t it. Didn’t panic, just side-footed low down into the right hand corner.”
Defoe has now taken his tally this season to six goals in seven matches, just two behind the eight goal total he managed in the second half of last season.

He’s keen to make his presence felt in Gerrard’s team, even if he is unlikely to replace Alfredo Morelos as the the number one striker.
The veteran is likely to still be incredibly important to the Gers’ season and it must be heartening for supporters to see him so fit, motivated and eager to impress even against lower-league opposition.
Given his start, there might even be a chance for the forward to score upwards of 20 goals this term, which would be a fantastic return.
