The former Rangers star has said that he has argued with his friends who have questioned whether the Liverpool legend can take the Gers any further.
Gerrard was appointed as the Rangers manager in the summer of 2018, and the hope among the Ibrox faithful was that he would stop their bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic from winning the Scottish Premiership title.
However, the Hoops won the title last season, with Rangers falling apart in the second half of the campaign.
Although Gerrard’s side gave Lennon’s team a run for their money in the opening months of the 2019-20 campaign, since the mid-season winter break, Celtic have raced ahead.
Rangers are now 13 points behind leaders Celtic in second place in the league table at the moment with a game in hand.
According to Sky Sports, the Scottish Premiership could be called off in the coming days and Celtic crowned champions, with the league suspended at the moment due to the global health crisis.
Ferguson wrote in The Daily Record: “Rangers only have themselves to blame for the 2019/20 season crashing and burning after the winter break.
“Gerrard knows that and is hurt by it. That’s partly why he is the man to take on the challenge of stopping Celtic making history 12 months down the line.
“It would be madness to even consider changing manager at this stage – not that Rangers will be. I have argued with my mates in group chats over Gerrard’s position, a lot of people are questioning if he can take the club any further.
“But I am certain he has potential to be a winning Rangers manager. Twice he has gone face-to-face with Neil Lennon and won so already he has proved he can deliver on the big stage even if the consistency isn’t there yet.”
