Ferguson delivers scathing assessment on Rangers’ McCrorie

Teenager Ross McCrorie has shone for Rangers since breaking into the first team at Ibrox.

Rangers icon Barry Ferguson has urged his former side’s supporters on PLZ Soccer not to get carried away in their praise for teenage defender Ross McCrorie.

The 19-year-old has shone for the Scottish giants since coming into the side following recent injuries to Fabio Cardoso and Bruno Alves, establishing himself as one of the best talents in Rangers’ promising academy.

Despite making a mistake against Hamilton, Rangers’ number 40 has continued to earn praise from pundits, players and fans alike as he continues to play at a level expected of someone way beyond his tender age.

However, former Rangers skipper Ferguson has pleaded with the club’s supporters to ease off with the praise and reduce the pressure on McCrorie to perform – describing his talent as mere potential rather than proven talent.

“Ross certainly has potential,” Ferguson said. “Ross has played a few games now, but I don’t like it when people get carried away. People are saying he’s going to be international player and a Rangers centre-back for the net 15 years.

“Let the boy get on with it. But he certainly has got plenty of potential. Loads of potential, let him make a few mistakes. He might get taken out of the team, but certainly, he can be a great. But it is only potential.”

Former manager Pedro Caixinha handed McCrorie his debut earlier this season from the bench in a 2-0 League Cup win over Partick Thistle, before throwing him in the deep end by starting the teenager against Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Since then, McCrorie has been a regular fixture of the Gers starting line-up and has started all three of interim boss Graeme Murty’s matches in charge, as well as scoring his first goal for the club in a league game against Partick.

He is expected to start again on Friday night as the Gers go up against Dundee at Dens Park on Friday night, with three points enough to take them into second place as Hibernian and Aberdeen play later on this weekend.
