Former Ibrox midfielder Barry Ferguson has backed Rangers manager Steven Gerrard’s decision to make James Tavernier the new Gers captain, as quoted in The Daily Record.

Liverpool legend Gerrard, who was appointed the Rangers manager earlier this summer, has made Tavernier the new captain of the Ibrox, replacing Lee Wallace.

Ferguson, who started his professional club football career at Rangers and had two separate spells at Ibrox, has backed Gerrard’s decision regarding captaincy.

“James Tavernier led Rangers out and will captain them in the new era,” Ferguson wrote in The Daily Record. “It’s a wise choice as he has been at the club for three years now.

“Lee Wallace obviously has his issues with the club and Tavernier was probably the most consistent player last season so it’s a good shout.

“I’d probably have given the armband to Allan McGregor but that’s just me being biased! Seriously, an outfield player is probably a better option.”

Wise choice

Tavernier is one of the best right-backs in the Scottish Premiership, and the former Newcastle United defender has developed well during his time at Rangers so far.

Given that the 26-year-old is a regular for Rangers, it made sense for Gerrard to give the right-back the captain’s armband.

Tavernier has been on the books of Rangers since the summer of 2015 when he joined from Wigan Athletic for a transfer fee reported by The Scottish Sun to be worth £200,000.

The former Newcastle defender has been linked with moves away from the Gers in the summer transfer window, with The Mirror claiming that Everton, Burnley and Swansea City interested in the former Newcastle defender (click here to read more).
