Former Ibrox star Barry Ferguson agrees with Rangers manager Steven Gerrard about Gers youngster Ross McCrorie.
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is one of the greatest midfielders to have ever played in the Premier League, and the new Rangers manager knows how to spot a good player in that position.
Appointed as the Rangers manager earlier this summer, Gerrard made some very interesting comments about 20-year-old midfielder Ross McCrorie earlier this week.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the former England international said that playing McCrorie at central defence instead of his usual position of midfield could have destroyed the Scotland Under-21 international in terms of his career.
Former Rangers and Scotland international midfielder Barry Ferguson has given his take on Gerrard’s comments about McCrorie.
Ferguson wrote in The Daily Record about Gerrard’s comments about McCrorie: “A young boy coming into the team needs to be protected. He has a bright future and like the manager I like him as a holding midfielder.
“I know he can play centre-half but I’ve always liked him in that No.6 position. Pedro Caixinha said he was going to be ‘one of the best centre- halves in history, not just for this club but for this country’ and that was putting too much pressure on him.
“You need to protect young players when they are coming through rather than make such bold predictions.”
Quality player
McCrorie is a very good midfielder who has a bright future ahead of him, and playing regularly in midfielder is only going to make the Rangers youngster better.
The 20-year-old will have to work hard to establish himself as a regular in Gerrard’s team, and perhaps the Scotland Under-21 international will do so in the coming weeks.
