Vincent Janssen has struggled on loan from Tottenham.
Fenerbahce president Ali Y. Koc has told Turkish outlet FubtolArena that the Turkish giants shelled out a huge £4.4million to secure the season-long loan signing of Tottenham Hotspur striker Vincent Janssen.
The 23-year-old striker has suffered with multiple injuries this season, limiting him to just 16 appearances for the SuperLig side. He has scored four goals, as well as laying on four assists alongside Roberto Soldado.
Instead, the 17-time Netherlands international has been sidelined from December until April with an ankle fracture, but has since returned to make three substitute appearances – one in which he found the back of the net against Kasimpasa.
But Koc was quoted as venting his frustration at Janssen’s loan fee, stating his side “need to do better” than seemingly overpaying on the likes of the former AZ Alkmaar striker.
“It’s incredible really. A club like us, Fenerbahce, always paying over the odds for players and it’s kind of become a tradition for our club. That’s not a good sign financially,” Koc said.
“For example, our club have paid €5m [£4.4m] for Vincent Janssen. This is just a loan deal. No option, or redemption clause. We paid straight €5m for 10 months of a loan deal. This is not good for our club. We need to do it better, and we can do it better.”
Janssen moved to Spurs from AZ in the summer of 2016 to act as Harry Kane’s back-up, but a lack of regular football and adapting to the English game saw him struggle. He managed just six goals in 38 outings, 26 of which were from the bench.
It remains to be seen what kind of future Janssen has in north London, with two years still remaining on his current Spurs contract. But with Mauricio Pochettino’s side already boasting Fernando Llorente, the question mark remains over whether they really need Janssen.
