Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald did not have the best start to life at Elland Road. However his recent performance against Barnsley suggests he has learned from his early struggles and is ready to prove his doubters wrong.
The German stopper was far better at commanding his area against the Tykes than he had been in his initial run of first-team matches, and it will be interesting to see if he can maintain that form in the weeks ahead.
It is one thing playing one decent game and quite another performing consistently, especially over the hectic Christmas and New Year period. That said, the Leeds ‘keeper looked far less shaky and appears to have taken all the criticism on board during his absence.
Wiedwald had been overlooked in favour of fellow summer signing Andy Lonergan for Leeds’ previous seven league games. However the Whites did not exactly impress defensively in that time and, after the 4-1 hammering against Wolves, the German was back between the stick.
On this evidence he will stay there for some time to come, and it is testament to the player and his manager Thomas Christiansen that he is willing to put things right.
Next up for Leeds is a game against Aston Villa and Wiedwald will be hoping to make it back-to-back clean sheets at the end of next week.
