Tottenham do not have a clear need for a defensive midfielder, but Ljubomir Fejsa could be much more.
Fejsa is a defensive midfielder, a position in which Tottenham do not have a clear opening – with Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama key players.
Squad depth is of course always valuable – and perhaps Fejsa offers something a lot more, something unquantifiable – a tremendous winning streak.
This past season Fejsa won his ninth league title in a row.
Benfica’s Ljubomir Fejsa
He has won four consecutive Primeira Liga medals with Benfica, two before that with Olympiakos, and three with Partizan Belgrade in his native Serbia.
The last time Fejsa failed to win a title was back in 2008, with his run of success almost unprecedented in modern football, and better than Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s streak of eight in a row which ended last season.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy
Even in Scotland, Celtic stalwarts like Scott Brown have only won six in a row on their current stretch of success.
Fejsa, 28, has plenty to offer Tottenham despite the fact they are well stocked in midfield, and his drive to win could be invaluable for a side struggling to get over the hump.
Spurs are close, but at the moment are ‘nearly men’. Fejsa could be the lucky charm Mauricio Pochettino needs to add to his squad.
