Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to react after finding out that Illan Meslier had been named in France’s squad for the U21 European Championship.

The U21 side, packed with huge talents such as Dayot Upamecano and Eduardo Camavinga, will face the Netherlands on May 31st.

Interestingly, Meslier will be joining the tournament at the quarter-final stage, as the other rounds were played earlier this year.

In our view, it’s great to see the 21-year-old earn some international recognition, even if it isn’t for the senior squad.

However, a few fans below think this news is a ‘shame’ for Meslier.

In fairness, we can see where they’re coming from.

The Leeds No.1 has enjoyed a stunning season, and if he played for another nation, there’s a good chance he’d be involved in the senior set-up.

Just look at England. The likes of Dean Henderson and Sam Johnstone have previously been called up by Gareth Southgate, and Meslier has outshone them both this season.

Unfortunately for the Leeds wonderkid, Didier Deschamps has the likes of Hugo Lloris, Steve Mandanda and Mike Maignan to choose from.

However, it’s surely only a matter of time until Meslier wins his first senior cap.

The £5 million glovesman broke Joe Hart’s 14-year record with a clean sheet against Southampton back in February.

Meslier broke Hart’s record for the most clean sheets in a single season for a goalkeeper before their 21st birthday.

In total, he has recorded 11 shutouts in 35 appearances.

Only Ederson, Edouard Mendy, Emiliano Martinez and Lloris have kept more.

Let’s see what the Leeds fans on Twitter have been saying about Meslier’s call-up…
