Chidera Ejuke might be playing the best football of his career but the Heerenveen winger still has regrets about a failed move to Liverpool, he admitted during an Instagram Live session with the Super Eagles.

A rapid winger with an eye for goal and the ability to make full-backs look a little silly, Ejuke has been a shining light in a difficult season for Eredivisie underachievers Heerenveen.

The 22-year-old contributed ten goals and six assists before the 2019/20 campaign was brought to a premature conclusion and it seems only a matter of time before a man who joined the Frisians last summer is on the move once again.

But, while Ejuke has been one of the best performers in Holland outside of Ajax, AZ and PSV in the last ten months, it seems that a move to Liverpool has passed him by for now.

“I was selected with a couple of my friends,” the former Valerenga star says, reminiscing about the time he spent on trial at the Merseyside giants.

“I did the trials for a couple of weeks and it didn’t seem that Liverpool were interested then.

“All of a sudden, it wasn’t a success. You feel bad. I felt like I disappointed my agent, my family, the people that believed in me. I never thought something like that would happen.”

If Ejuke continues to leave defenders for dead and score goals for fun from his favoured left-wing position, a player who shares quite a few stylistic similarities with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane might one day find himself on Liverpool’s radar again.

For now, however, the Nigeria U20 ace will be desperate to prove that he is more than a one-season wonder amid speculation suggesting that he could leave Heerenveen for one of the biggest clubs in Holland.
