Could the season be over for Gylfi Sigurdsson, and maybe even his World Cup hopes, after Everton reveal knee injury worse than first thought.

Everton have confirmed that Gylfi Sigurdsson will see a specialist after suffering a knee injury during the 2-0 Premier League victory against Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend.

“It is anticipated that the 28-year-old Icelandic international could be sidelined for several weeks but it will only be after consulting with the specialist that a definitive timeframe will be known,” the statement read.

Many are fearing the worst with the Sun reporting that Sigurdsson has damaged the ligaments in his knee and could therefore miss the rest of the season and possibly the 2018 World Cup.

Apparently the problem is worse that first thought and the fact that the Iceland international stayed on the pitch against Brighton rather than being substituted only confounded matters further.

It is believed that Sigurdsson may have to have surgery and as a result could be out of action for nine months after his brother Olafa Mar told Icelandic outlet fotbolti.net that the ligaments could be torn.

This will be a huge blow to the attacking midfielder but also to the Toffees, who made the former Swansea City man their club record signing last summer when joining from the Liberty Stadium for £45million (BBC).

Since them Sigurdsson has played 33 times in all competitions for the Merseyside club, scoring six goals, but could become their latest long-term absentee with Yannick Bolasie, Seamus Coleman and Ramiro Funes Mori having only just come back from around a year on the sidelines, while James McCarthy faces a similar spell out after suffering a double leg break.
