Leeds fans react after Gaetano Berardi says he is not good enough to play at left-back.
Gaetano Berardi of Leeds United tackles Connor Roberts of Middlesbrough during the Sky Bet Championship match at Elland Road.
Gaetano Berardi surprised many people this week when he admitted that Leeds United needed a better left-back than him.
Usually operating on the right side of defence, Berardi has been filling in on the left as the Whites struggle to find a replacement for Charlie Taylor – who joined Burnley in the summer.
Matt Taylor of Bristol City (L) and Gaetano Berardi of Leeds United clash resulting in red cards for both during the Sky Bet Championship match at Ashton Gate.
“It is not my normal position, but, like every year, I try to do my best,” the 29-year-old told the Yorkshire Evening Post. “I know probably this team needs a better player than me, but I just want to play and do my best every Saturday.”
It’s never entirely clear how comments like these will go down among the fans, but Berardi is already held in high regard at Elland Road because of his work ethic.
Now this selfless attitude for the team seems to have simply endeared the Swiss to the Leeds faithful even more, as shown by the responses to his comments on Twitter.
Berardi has now been with the Yorkshire club for three-and-a-half years and has made 97 appearances in all competitions.
However, how long he will remain at left-back under head coach Thomas Christiansen after this latest admission remains to be seen.
