Leeds United were linked with bringing John Sheridan in.

A difficult managerial year for John Sheridan has got even worse after the Irishman was fired by Oldham Athletic.

Sheridan was in his second stint with the club but this season has begun poorly with Oldham sitting at the bottom of League One with only four points from nine games.

Oldham’s website confirmed his dismissal – following a crushing 5-1 defeat to Rotherham.

It is just over a year since Sheridan was linked with becoming manager of the club where he starred as a player, at Leeds United.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported in 2016 that Sheridan’s odds on becoming Leeds manager were as short as 1/6 favourite.

Former owner Massimo Cellino moved to appoint Garry Monk instead, and Sheridan has done little to prove him wrong.

He landed a role managing Notts County soon after, but lasted only until this January when he was fired after a poor run of results.

Sheridan returned to Oldham and the managed to help them retain their place in League One last season.

This was with the help of Leeds talent Lee Erwin, signed on loan, but he was unable to bring him back this summer.

Sheridan’s Oldham have scored just 12 times in nine games and sit bottom of the division.

A parting of the ways seem inevitable, and Sheridan’s chances of landing his dream job at Leeds United seem further away than ever, with the Whites flying high at the top of the Championship.
