Former Newcastle United striker Faustino Asprilla has acknowledged the club’s return to the top flight of English football.

Newcastle beat Preston North End 4-1 at St James’ Park to clinch promotion with two games to spare.

Despite losing their first two games of the season, Newcastle’s spell in the Championship never looked like being an extended one and it is no surprise to see them make an instant return to the Premier League.

Asprilla reached out on Twitter after their win last night, writing: “Congratulations to @NUFC for achieving promotion after one year and returning to #PremierLeague #Newcastle.”

The Colombian legend was a fan favourite at Newcastle in the mid-90s, playing for the club between 1996 and 1998 before retiring from football six years later.

He may never have won a trophy at Newcastle, but his signing was a fantastic moment and a demonstration of how the club competed to bring in the world’s best players.

Newcastle need to get back to a stage where they can do that once again. Being back in the Premier League is a vital step in the right direction.
