Bayer Leverkusen talisman Kai Havertz is a ‘faster version of Mesut Ozil’ and would be a great fit for Liverpool, former Anfield favourite Don Hutchison has told ESPN FC.
With the eyes of the world turning towards the Bundesliga over the last week or so, plenty were wondering whether one of the hottest prospects in the game would be able to handle all of the extra attention.
But, with three goals in two games since German football returned to our screens, it is fair to say Havertz has gone about things in with typical grace and maturity.
The 20-year-old Germany international followed up his brace of headers against Werder Bremen with a classy, first-time finish as Leverkusen thumped top-four rival Borussia Monchengladbach on their own soil on Saturday, taking his tally to 14 for the season.
Liverpool had made Havertz their top target before the global health crisis, according to the Express. And Hutchison, for one, is backing his former club’s pursuit of a rangy number ten who continues to be likened to Arsenal’s World Cup winning enigma.
“I think he’s far too good for Leverkusen. I think he goes to the very biggest clubs in Europe and I think he walks into most sides. He’s certainly got to fight for his place but the talent’s there at 20 years of age,” Hutchison says.
“The one player I would liken him to is a taller, faster version of Mesut Ozil. I think he plays off the left-hand side, through the middle, he’s predominantly left-footed, he’s very silky, easy on the eye.
“So again, yes Liverpool would be a great fit.”
According to Sky Sports, Leverkusen want £100 million for arguably the best young player in the Bundesliga (apart from a certain former Manchester City starlet that is).
With even the Premier League’s biggest and best likely to keep their powder dry this summer, the smart money is on Havertz staying at his current employers for another 12 months.
