Rangers new boy Fashion Sakala has claimed he has been following the Light Blues “for a long time” before agreeing to join Steven Gerrard’s side and confessed he is looking to learn from Gerrard and veteran Ibrox striker Jermain Defoe.

Sakala finally joined his new Rangers teammates earlier this week after having to quarantine but the Zambian striker is raring to go as the Gers prepare for the new campaign.

After signing a pre-contract earlier this year, the African admitted that Kemar Roofe’s Europa League strike against Standard Liege made him think of Rangers as a potential destination in the future.

“I’ve been following Rangers for a long time, I used to watch their games even before their interest came,” Sakala told Go Radio.

“When the interest came, something ignited in me to say this is the right thing.

“And when I saw the goal that Roofe scored, I just thought that this could be a very good destination for me.”

Having only joined his new side this week, it seems unlikely that Sakala will be involved today when the Light Blues take on Arsenal in a pre-season friendly at Ibrox.

While he might have to wait for his first minutes on the pitch, the former KV Oostende star is excited to work under Gerrard at Ibrox.

Sakala is certain working with the Rangers boss, and Jermain Defoe, can help him contine to improve as he looks to make a name for himself, adding: I really want to learn from them and I believe it will help me become a better player, and also a better person.

“When you’re a better person, you can be a better player.

“As young as I am, looking at the careers of Gerrard and Defoe, these are the people I need to learn from.

“I will gain a lot from them and they will help me to keep going in my career.”
