Farhad Moshiri could be about to make his biggest statement of intent yet at Everton – Our View

Farhad Moshiri hasn’t been afraid of flexing his muscle since becoming Everton chairman.

He’s spent millions on bringing in big names and that’s helped the Toffees propel themselves up the table.

The Toffees have had some massive names arrive at Goodison Park in recent years, with the likes of Carlo Ancelotti and James Rodriguez currently plying their trade on Merseyside, but Moshiri may be lining up an even bigger statement of intent.

Indeed, Everton reportedly want Kalidou Koulibaly, and while nothing is advanced there yet, the Senegal international reportedly wants a move.

Now, Koulibaly isn’t a bigger name than either Ancelotti or Rodriguez, and it would be ridiculous to suggest that, but his status in the game at this time is greater than either Ancelotti’s or Rodriguez’s was when they joined the Toffees.

Indeed, Ancelotti had just been sacked from Napoli when Everton picked him up, and he was seen as a manager on the decline, while Rodriguez’s stock had fallen to the point that Real Madrid were willing to let him go for free.

Everton bringing those two in was certainly eye-opening, but it wasn’t as much a statement of intent as it was a gamble. These were two superstars who needed a second chance, while Koulibaly is a player coveted by the biggest clubs in the world.

We all know he almost signed for Man City last summer, but Liverpool want him this summer, with the Reds reportedly making an informal offer for the defender earlier this month, and while that is a dent in Everton’s plans, it’s a testament to just how good Koulibaly is.

The defender is being sniffed out by some of the biggest clubs in Europe, and if Everton land him, it will certainly be a big statement of intent, especially when you consider how much he’d cost.

Of course, Everton are no strangers to spending big, with Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson costing almost £100m combined, but there’s a big difference between landing a defender from Napoli who’s wanted by Liverpool and bringing in two standout players from clubs such as Watford or Swansea.

The pricetag, the reputation of the player and the stature of other interested clubs means that bringing Koulibaly in would be the biggest statement if intent Moshiri has made yet at Everton.
