According to The Express, Liverpool and Everton were offered the chance to sign Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga on summer transfer deadline day.
It has been reported that Everton were approached to sign the Argentina international goalkeeper, but the Toffees brought Robin Olsen on loan from AS Roma instead.
Gazzaniga was offered to Liverpool on summer deadline day following Adrian’s mistake in their heavy defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League, according to the report, which has added that the defending English champions snubbed the chance to sign the 28-year-old and chose to stand by the Spaniard, who will be playing for the Reds for the time being due to injury to Alisson.
Sensible decision?
Alisson will be on the sidelines for four to six weeks, as reported by Goal.com, and there was really no point in Liverpool signing Tottenham’s third-choice goalkeeper just for this (relatively short) period.
True, Gazzaniga is a decent goalkeeper and was described as “fantastic” by then Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino on the club’s official website in November 2018 – but the Reds would have had to pay a transfer fee and wages for the 28-year-old, and it would not have been money well spent after Alisson returned and went straight into the team.
As for Everton, Olsen is a good goalkeeper with international pedigree with Sweden, and a season-long loan deal means there is no transfer fee involved and he is less of a financial risk.
