Brian Brobbey admits he’d love the ‘fantastic’ Steven Bergwijn to join him at Ajax, speaking to NOS about Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League benchwarmer.
It is almost two years now since Bergwijn announced himself in English football with a stunning touch-and-volley in a 2-0 victory over Manchester City.
Bergwijn, a regular scorer at PSV Eindhoven, has found the net just three times in his last 42 Premier League appearances.
And, after failing to find a place in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-2-1 formation, the Amsterdam-born 24-year-old is expected to return to his hometown club before the January transfer window comes to an end.
Is Steven Bergwijn finished at Tottenham?
Ajax failed with an opening bid in the region of £15 million last week (The Times).
The reigning Eredivisie champions will return with a second offer sooner rather than later, however. And Brobbey will welcome his spring-heeled compatriot with open arms at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
“Bergwijn is a fantastic player,” says Brobbey, who scored twice on his return to Ajax this weekend, having joined on loan from RB Leipzig.
“So (the squad) is only getting better. Good competition. Very nice.”
It is understood that sporting director Marc Overmars will tie up a deal to bring the one-time Ajax youngster back to where it all began, potentially in time for next week’s crunch clash with Bergwijn’s former employers PSV.

“He is a very good player,” says Michel Vorm, one-time Tottenham and Netherlands goalkeeper (ESPN).
Vorm, however, believes that Bergwijn has a lot left to offer in English football.
“It would be a shame if he went back now. Steven came to Tottenham in a difficult period. Pochettino out, Mourinho in, Mourinho out, Conte in. He has not yet been able to show himself, also due to injuries.”
“Conte wants to play football in a certain way. That may not suit him. In that respect I understand, but I think it is a shame. He is a good player and a good boy. I think Tottenham can still enjoy him a lot.”
Ajax sold David Neres to Shakhtar Donetsk last week, freeing up funds for Bergwijn’s arrival.
