Clinton Morrison has told Five Live Sport that Newcastle United should appoint Frank Lampard as their next manager.

Lampard in at Newcastle?

Lampard has been tipped to be in contention to land the Newcastle job, as they appear to be searching for a new boss.

Steve Bruce has not been officially sacked yet, but there is a feeling that it is only a matter of time before he goes.

And Morrison thinks that if Bruce does depart St. James’ Park then Lampard could be a great replacement.

“I think Lampard would be a great choice,” Morrison began.

“I just think Frank deserves an opportunity. I thought he was doing a decent job at Chelsea, but they did [make the right decision]. Tuchel has gone in there and he’s a fantastic manager.

“But if Steve Bruce is going to lose his job, I think someone like a Frank Lampard.

“Eddie Howe wants the job, but for me personally I think someone like a Frank Lampard would walk into the dressing room and lift the club.

“A lot of fans are getting excited about Conte or Zidane, but that’s different. They want to be challenging now, at the moment Newcastle are in a relegation fight.

“I think now Frank or Howe are the right type of appointment.”

Going to the next level

Lampard’s dismissal at Chelsea was considered harsh at the time, although Thomas Tuchel has taken the Blues on to the next level.

The relatively inexperienced boss has shown an ability to bring through young players in his managerial career to date, though.

With Newcastle likely to target some exciting players in the transfer market, with their newfound riches, Lampard could be a good fit to develop the influx of talent which come to the club.

Newcastle’s first priority will be to stay in the Premier League, though.

The Magpies have made a poor start to the campaign, and could face a battle to stay in the top flight, even with the improved mood around the club following the take-over.
