Ron-Robert Zieler is getting fed up with Hannover’s failure to offer him a new contract, and that could reportedly lead to a move to Liverpool.
Indeed, according to Bild, the Reds are keen on a move for Zieler due to the fact he’s a homegrown player after his time at Manchester United, and it now looks like a move to Anfield could be on the cards.
It is interesting that Zieler could end up at Liverpool after a spell at Manchester United – that divide is rarely crossed, and while he’d likely be going in as a third-choice goalkeeper, he is a player that has earned big praise from Sir Alex Ferguson in the past.
Ferguson a fan of Zieler
The former Manchester United manager gave the German praise when he found out he’d made his national team debut.
“That’s fantastic. I must send him a message,” Ferguson said.
“He got an injury here in the Reserves and was out for about eight months.”
“Unfortunately, when he came back, Ben Amos had jumped ahead of him in the pecking order. I’m really pleased to hear this news, though. I’m glad he’s doing well.
“We helped Ron-Robert orchestrate his move to Hannover. We had a scout over there at the time and I gave him a call. He then came across, spoke to Ron and got the Hannover coach across to Manchester to watch him train.
“They were happy to take him and we were delighted to organise that move for him. He’s since come on leaps and bounds and is obviously doing fantastically. He always worked hard and he’s a very nice lad.”
Best third-choice in the league
Zieler would only be joining Liverpool as the third-choice goalie, but he may well be the best third-choice in the league if he comes in.
Indeed, how many other teams can boast a fully-fledged international goalie as their third-choice? A World Cup winning one at that
Newcastle have a decent stable with Nick Pope, Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius, but other than that, it’s slim pickings.
Having depth in goal isn’t super important, but it’s a nice luxury to have.
