David Moyes has played down suggestions that West Ham United could cancel Jack Wilshere’s contract, telling Football London that the injury-hit play-maker has been ‘fantastic’ in the build up to their Premier League opener.

At the age of 28, a man once famously described as the ‘future of English football’ by the legendary Xavi really should be one of the finest all-action performers in the game today, and the go-to, Gazza-esque presence at the heart of Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions midfield.

Instead, he is once again building up his fitness after two more years ruined by injury.

Wilshere has made just six Premier League starts since moving across the city from Arsenal to West Ham in 2018.

According to the Mail, the Hammers are giving serious consideration to terminating his contract and getting that £100,000 pay-packet off the wage bill.

But, if Moyes’ pre-match comments are anything to go by, perhaps Wilshere has a future at the London Stadium after all.

“He’s been fantastic in training. I know nothing about (cancelling his contract), no,” says the former Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland coach.

Of course, if Wilshere can rediscover his fitness and his form, he would stroll and slalom his way into this West Ham midfield.

But his ability has never been in doubt.

Only once since 2010/11 has perhaps the most naturally gifted English midfielder of his generation made more than 20 starts in a single Premier League season.

Wilshere has not been included in West Ham’s XI since August 2019.
