Some Rangers fans are raving about one of Steven Gerrard’s more low-key summer recruits after Thursday’s win in Belgium.
Rangers beat Standard Liege 2-0 on their own turf, getting their Europa League campaign off to the perfect start.
Goals from James Tavernier – a penalty – and Kemar Roofe – who lobbed the ‘keeper from inside his own half – secured the points.
But it was another player who caught the eye of the following Rangers supporters on Twitter.
Calvin Bassey signed for Rangers on a free after his Leicester City contract expired.
But despite arriving at Ibrox without a first-team appearance to show, the 20-year-old has settled in well as Borna Barisic’s understudy – playing five times before Thursday’s trip to Liege.
And, after the Croatian picked up an injury 43 minutes in, it was Bassey who stepped in for his debut in the Europa League proper.

The Englishman is under contract at Rangers until 2024, the same year Barisic’s deal expires.
And the battle to be Gerrard’s first-choice left-back could get interesting between now and then.
