Alan Shearer waxed-lyrical about Steven Gerrard on BBC Radio 5 Live and the ‘fantastic’ job he is doing at Rangers.
The former England striker shared that he recently spoke to the Rangers manager and his fellow countryman told him that he was adamant that he wasn’t going to get ‘carried away’ with where his team are at.
Well, the Gers recorded a 1-0 win over their bitter Old Firm rivals on Saturday to move 19 points clear of their neighbours, who have three games in hand, but even then the gap is still pretty big.
Prior to Ranges win yesterday, Shearer shared what Gerrard told him and how he doesn’t see any reason as to why the club cannot continue on their recent surge.
“When I spoke to Steven Gerrard about three weeks ago, he was very reluctant to get carried away, understandably,” said Shearer. “But he was also quite quick to praise his players in terms of their attitude and how they are facing up to every challenge.
“Every challenge that has been put up with them this season, or most of them, apart from that one game they were defeated in the cup then they have come up with the goods. So, I see no reason for that to change.
“But he also said [when I spoke to him in an interview after Rangers’ cup exit] that was a new him in trying to get a balance in terms of how to react and how to control himself and get more experienced in the job.
“He did say when he first went into it that he was excited. He has done things and said things that perhaps he shouldn’t. But, hey when you go into something that’s exactly what’s going to happen. But he’s still learning and doing a fantastic job.”

This is a historic season in Scottish football because of what is on the line for both Old Firm clubs.
There will no doubt be anger in the Celtic camp for how they have well and truly drowned themselves during the season they are searching for the ten.
Not far from Parkhead, Gerrard will have the biggest smile on his face because Rangers have managed to stay composed during such a crucial season for the club.
