The Villa midfielder scored a sensational volley against Sheffield Wednesday at Villa Park last year.

A number of Aston Villa fans and also some neutrals have taken to Twitter to question why John McGinn’s wondergoal against Sheffield Wednesday did not made the cut for FIFA’s Puskas Award.

The Scotland international opened his account for the club following his switch to Villa Park from Hibernian in style last September, when the West Midlands club hosted the Owls in the Championship.

After Wednesday had taken the lead through Marco Matias, McGinn equalised as a looped clearance came his way, before unleashing a stunning first-time volley which, beginning its trajectory outside the frame of the goal, found the top corner.

Despite the sheer quality of the goal, it did not feature in FIFA’s ten-goal shortlist for the best goal of the year, leaving some supporters truly baffled as to how it could have been overlooked.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah won last year’s Puskas Award, while other past winners since its creation in 2009 have included Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, James Rodriguez, Olivier Giroud as well as 2019 nominee Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Two goals from the UK have made this year’s shortlist – Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend against Premier League champions Manchester City and Cliftonville Ladies’ Billie Simpson against Sion Swifts Ladies.
