Uruguay made it two wins from two games at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 in Rostov-on-Don on Wednesday evening.

Oscar Tabarez’s men had beaten Egypt 1-0 on Friday thanks to Jose Maria Gimenez’s last-gasp header, and having been far from convincing in that match, much was expected of them against a Saudi Arabia side who lost 5-0 to Russia last week.

However, Uruguay were underwhelming once again, displaying a one-paced side without any real urgency, and they claimed a narrow 1-0 win thanks to Luis Suarez’s goal, pouncing from close range after Mohammed Al-Owais had failed to deal with Carlos Sanchez’s corner.

It’s two 1-0 wins in a row for Uruguay, who look tough to beat given the impressive defensive spine of Fernando Muslera, Diego Godin and the aforementioned Gimenez, but they don’t look particularly good going forward – even with Suarez and Edinson Cavani in attack.

One problem is the pedestrian midfield, as Rodrigo Bentancur and Matias Vecino have completely lacked any sort of dynamism or creativity, with Vecino particularly failing to impress.

The Inter Milan midfielder was linked with Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend, as Tuttosport claimed that Spurs were keen to strike a deal for the Uruguayan at around €30million (£26million).

However, based on his World Cup displays, Spurs would be wise to avoid the 26-year-old, as he has been slammed on Twitter for his performance in the lacklustre 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia.

Some called Vecino ‘a sitting duck’ or even ‘like Fellaini’ after a dismal display, with others calling him useless, shocking and called for Tabarez to drop him for the rest of the tournament in favour of reportedly Arsenal-bound Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira.
