Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren played the full match as his Croatia side recorded a score draw against Wales on Sunday.
Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has come under criticism for the role he played in Gareth Bale equalising during Wales’ 1-1 draw with Croatia on Sunday.
Centre-back Lovren came up against the Real Madrid man in a Euro 2020 qualifier in Cardiff, and despite his team taking an early lead, Bale would equalise for his team on the stroke of half time.
Ben Davies’ bursting run through the middle resulted in him playing a through ball to Bale, who was on the shoulder of Lovren, as the Liverpool man struggled to stop him from putting the ball into the back of the net.
A number of supporters on Twitter picked up on that and were very critical of the role Lovren played for Bale’s goal, but the away team were protesting about a potential foul on their player before Davies played his through ball.
It is perhaps a little easy targetting a player like Lovren because of how is perceived by neutral supporters, but he would have been pleased to earn some much-needed game time on the international stage.
Not only that, Croatia are sitting top of Group E, as they are edging ever closer to booking their place for the European Championships next summer.
Lovren, who moved to Anfield in 2014 for £20 million from fellow Premier League side Southampton [BBC Sport], has found regular football hard to come by this season.
