Fans, however, expressed their disappointment in how things unfolded in Las Vegas.

Indeed, the 37-year-old lost by way of TKO to Max Holloway after suffering a knee injury, with the fight called off after just 66 seconds.

Following perhaps the most underwhelming ending possible, fans on social media reacted.

Fans disappointed as McGregor fight ends early

One X user shared the famous meme of the NFL star running onto the field for his debut for the New York Jets, just before he famously got injured.

Other UFC fans were equally as cutting about McGregor’s return fight.

One fan wrote: “I feel so bad for anyone who bought tickets.”

Another added: “We gotta replace this meme with McGregor bro cause that was genuinely shorter.”

This fan said: “This is what came to mind immediately.”

“Pretty much”, read another response to the Rodgers meme.

“I knew this was coming the second the fight ended,” claimed another fan.

McGregor opened the fight with two sloppy attempts at roundhouse kicks, landing awkwardly after both.

He slipped twice within the opening 40 seconds and limped for most of his time in the octagon, before leaving it even before Holloway’s hand was raised.

There were boos from fans in attendance as McGregor left the arena floor without speaking.

Holloway, meanwhile, expressed his desire for a trilogy fight after McGregor beat him by way of decision back in 2013.

Holloway did admit that the ending was a disappointment but urged UFC fans to cheer for McGregor when speaking after his victory.

The other major UFC story of the night saw Paddy Pimblett beat Benoit Saint-Denis in the co-main event in just 52 seconds.
