The EFL say investigations into the so-called ‘spying’ incident involving the Whites and Derby will continue.
The fallout from the so-called “Spygate” saga continues to rumble on, much to the chagrin of Leeds United, as the English Football League confirmed that investigations into the matter will continue after announcing “further exploration” was required.
Marcelo Bielsa, the Whites manager, caused somewhat of a stir in January when it emerged that the Elland Road outfit had sent an employee to watch Derby County’s training session ahead of their Championship clash.
Leeds ran out 2-0 winners over the Rams in the highly anticipated game on Friday 11 January, with Kemar Roofe’s near-post flick and Jack Harrison’s tap-in yielding all three points for the hosts.
The following Wednesday, as the story became discussed ad nauseum, Bielsa scheduled an ad-hoc press conference in which he outlined the depth of scouting he does at the club, in a passionate defence of his methods – the Yorkshire Evening Post produced a full transcript.
A formal investigation was started on January 15 and the matter was further discussed by the EFL board on Friday, with a statement by the body saying: “Following a comprehensive review of all available evidence, it was determined that there remain a number of areas that require further exploration and clarification. These investigations will take place at the earliest opportunity.”
In response, a Leeds statement read: “We understand the EFL’s need to request more time to investigate the complaint further and we will continue to cooperate fully as we look to resolve the matter quickly.”
