Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez had made the bold claim that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are a better side than his 2005 Champions League winners, in quotes via BBC Sport.
Liverpool face the huge task of dethroning the current European champions Real Madrid in this year’s final on Saturday in Kiev, but they will be hoping for smoother sailing than the 2005 final in Istanbul, having trailed 3-0 to AC Milan at the interval.
Talking about what is largely regarded as the best comeback in football history, the Spaniard asserted that the current finalists are better than his 2005 outfit, which boasted the likes of Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Dietmar Hamann.
“We had Stevie, of course, also some players with experience and quality, Alonso and Hamann. We had players who worked very hard, we had a good balance,” he said.
“This team also has good balance, but the front three can make a difference on their own. We had one player who maybe could make a difference on his own, and here they have three.”

It seems pretty unanimous that Liverpool fans are happier with their current finalists on the whole. The attacking prowess of the Reds’ front three – in Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and superstar Egyptian Mohamed Salah – has revived supporters’ faith that special things are on the horizon.
