Liverpool’s Marko Grujic started for Serbia against South Korea.
Marko Grujic cannot get a start for Liverpool at present but was deemed good enough for Serbia to start for them earlier today.
The central midfielder was selected by his country for their World Cup qualifying match away to South Korea, and acquitted himself well.
Grujic featured for the first half in a defensive midfield role, before being taken off as Mladen Krstajić rotated his side.
He has played for Serbia’s senior team before but this was his first start, and first appearance in 2017 for his country.
Grujic became Liverpool’s first signing at Liverpool in January 2016, but he has been stuck playing under-23 football.
The reaction to Grujic’s performance for his country was positive, and shows him that he is better than simply playing academy football.
There is still time for him to earn his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans this season, but he needs to make this campaign count.
With new signing Naby Keita joining in July, competition for places will be even tougher, and Grujic’s task will be harder.
Liverpool must hope that his appearance for Serbia inspires him to kick on at club level.
